PS5 Pirate RPG Sea of Remnants’ New Gameplay Trailer Doesn’t Really Answer Any Questions

One of the most intriguing announcements made at Sony’s latest State of Play was Sea of Remnants, and despite a second trailer showing more gameplay, we’re still scratching our heads a little.

The new video focuses on the port city hub world you can explore at your leisure, showing off merchants, character customisation, and side activities like mahjong.

It all looks super impressive, particularly with regard to animation; there’s lots of incidental detail going on around you with NPCs conversing and getting on with their day.

However, we’re still a bit in the dark as to how the game feels to play moment-to-moment.

To recap, Sea of Remnants is a free-to-play pirate RPG in which you play an amnesiac seafarer.

A press release tells us there are “over 300 characters”, each belonging to one of several rival factions. Players are apparently free to befriend or antagonise whomever they choose, and your actions will have an impact on the status of each group.

The new trailer doesn’t really show it off properly, but this game’s combat is turn-based and strategic. It seems you’ll gather a crew as you play and each can specialise in different classes to help you in fights.

Additionally, there will be real-time naval battles when you’re out on the waves, and you’ll be fighting enemy ships as well as large sea monsters.

You’ll be able to return to Orbtopia, which acts as a safe haven and hub town, where you can engage in various activities like fishing and cooking.

Again, the new trailer focuses mainly on this last point, but it’s cut together in such a way that it’s hard to get a firm grasp on how everything really plays out.

Still, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t interested; the stylish visuals and fun music are charming. We just hope it all comes together in a cohesive way when it launches on PS5 next year.

What do you make of Sea of Remnants so far? Do you also think the ‘of’ in the game’s logo looks too much like a sword and not enough like the word ‘of’? Tell us in the comments section below.
